I recently pulled out my Red Raspberry Leaf tea and have been drinking it regularly.  Red Raspberry Leaf tea is usually connected with fertility but it can also help with many peri-menopausal symptoms as well.

Red Raspberry Leaf helps tonify the uterus and helps with excessive bleeding.  It can also help with insomnia and hot flashes.  It is hormone balancing because of the high amounts of vitamins and minerals most associated with hormone balance.  These are magnesium, potassium, iron, calcium, the B vitamins B, Vitamin A, Vitamin C, and Vitamin E.

I don’t know why but a scene from My Cousin Vinny popped into my head this morning and I thought it was a funny way to explain what’s going on during peri-menopause.

You know that part in the movie when Marissa Tomei goes on her rant that ends with her saying “My biological clock is ticking like this!” while stomping her feet on the ground.

That’s what I picture is going on in our bodies every time the pituitary sends a signal for the ovaries to release an egg and it doesn’t respond.  A young Marisa Tomei (our pituatary) yelling at our ovaries to release an egg. Each time getting louder and stomping harder.  An almost fruitless act because, in peri-menopause, the volume is turned down so low that the ovaries can’t hear or can’t respond to the yelling and stomping and no egg is released.  (I’ll have to come up with another movie scene for the ovary response – let me know if you think of one.)

It’s the release of the egg (ovulation) that triggers a surge in progesterone.  And that’s what’s needed to offset estrogen.  And without it, we are left estrogen dominant and can experience longer and heavier bleeding and other symptoms like insomnia and weight gain.

I’m enjoying adding back Red Raspberry Leaf Tea more regularly to my daily routine.  I encourage you to do the same.  It tastes great on its own — like an herbal leafy tea, much like nettle — or you can enjoy it as a latte.  Here’s my recipe for an herbal Lavender Latte using red raspberry leaf tea.
